Authors are sometimes so grateful to get a publication offer that they may be tempted to sign the first version of a publication contract that they receive, especially if negotiating seems complicated, intimidating, or risky. But there is a lot at stake for authors in a book deal, and it is well worth the effort to read the contract, understand its contents, and negotiate for favorable terms. This book, first published in 1970, showed how wealthy public school districts around the nation spent considerably more money per pupil (while imposing lower tax rates on their property owners) than did low wealth school districts. It advances a legal argument as to why this regime should be declared unconstitutional by our courts.

This book is based on face-to-face interviews with Wisconsin candidates, both winners and losers in the general election, running for various offices in 1964.  The study was designed to explore politicians' beliefs about their constituents, the sorts of information they use to formulate those beliefs, and the strategies they adopt in order to gain and retain elective office.
Topics: political candidates, voting, electoral politics, legislative process, elections, Wisconsin

This book addresses the issue of whether nation-states can form regional islands of peace in a turbulent international system. It carefully describes the problems and prospects in forming common markets and security communities among neighboring states. After surveying various theories of peace through regionalism, it sets forth a model of regional economic integration against which real cases from Europe, Latin America, and Africa are judged.
Topics: economics, nation-states, international relations, globalism, peace

In News for All, Leonard provides a fascinating account of the love-hate relationship we have always had with the news, from the early nineteenth century to the present. Reading the news was once a central social function, as citizens eagerly gathered in taverns, inns, post offices, and elsewhere to hear the latest reports. During an era when travel was slow and when geography, religion, class, race, and language divided the nation, all shared the universal habit of taking a favorite paper....

Authors Alliance promotes authorship for the public good by supporting authors who write to be read. We embrace the unprecedented potential digital networks have for the creation and distribution of knowledge and culture. We represent the interests of authors who want to harness this potential to share their creations more broadly in order to serve the public good. Unfortunately, authors face many barriers that prevent the full realization of this potential to enhance public access to knowledge...

"In tracing the publishing story of Diderot’s  Encyclopédie , Darnton uses new sources—the papers of eighteenth-century publishers—that allow him to respond firmly to a set of problems long vexing historians. He shows how the material basis of literature and the technology of its production affected the substance and diffusion of ideas."
